NEW LEARNER:

Learn to drive with a 3 Counties Driving Instructor: Before you learn to drive make sure you know about the rules and restrictions that apply to you. Different vehicles eg. motorbikes, cars and lorries have different minimum ages and restrictions. Before you start to drive, you must:

  1. Hold a valid, provisional driving licence for Great Britain or Northern Ireland
  2. Make sure that any vehicle you drive is roadworthy and properly taxed and insured
It is important to learn safe driving practice from the beginning of your driving career because bad habits are hard to break. It is unlikely that anyone except an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) would have the experience, knowledge and training to teach you properly. Learning safe driving habits from the start will improve the safety of yourself and other road users. For more details about the legal requirements of learning to drive go to: https://www.gov.uk/browse/driving
This is where it pays to go to a 3 Counties Driving Approved Driving Instructor for all your driving tuition needs, from beginning to learn to drive, through to advanced driving skills. All 3 Counties Driving instructors are fully qualified to the Driving Standards Agency (DSA)
Provisional Driving Licence:
As a new learner you must apply for and hold a provisional driving licence. This is obtained from the DVLA and by clicking on the following link you can apply on-line:   https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence
Your Instructor:
All 3 Counties instructors are DVSA approved and qualified. We all have to undergo a rigorous re-testing process every four years, so you know you can have peace of mind knowing that your instructor is regularly checked-out by the proper authorities. For an instructor in your area, click on Find an Instructor and follow the links.
The Highway Code:

It is important that you purchase a copy of the Highway Code - and make sure you read it fully! The Highway Code gives you a great starting point for learning to drive and is used as the basis for all driving matters, especially the Theory Test.
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code Reading the Highway Code before starting your Theory Test study will help you answer the questions in the Theory test, AND it will help you to understand more clearly how to deal with different situations when you are out ‘on the road’. It will also give you full details of the many different road signs, layouts, rules and procedures that you will come across in your driving career.

ALWAYS: book through the approved www.gov.uk sites shown above. If in doubt, DO NOT pay any fees but seek the advice of your 3 Counties Driving instructor first. Please DO NOT search for driving test as you will almost certainly be passed to an agency.

THE PRACTICAL TEST

Once you have passed your Theory Test your instructor will discuss with you’re your readiness for the practical test. When you both agree that you are ready to book a practical test go to https://www.gov.uk/book-driving-test

This video shows you about the car practical test (Video)

The practical test also includes an element of independent driving. This will require candidates to drive for ten minutes or so following either road signs or a simple set of instructions given to them by the examiner.  Your 3 Counties Instructor will help your practice this.

Examples of the road signs could be “Follow the road signs to Frimley/the railway station/the M3 motorway” and it will be for the student to make the decisions on which route to take at junctions. Examples of a simple set of instructions will be something like “Please take the first turning on the left, the second exit at the roundabout, followed by the second turning on the right.”

The examiner will also show you a simple diagram outlining these instructions. You will be allowed to ask the examiner to repeat the instructions, but the examiner WILL NOT correct you whilst you are driving if you take the wrong turning.

An example of this type of simple diagram is:

PASS PLUS

Pass Plus is an established training course aimed at new drivers. It was designed by the Driving & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) with the help of insurers and the driving instruction industry, and consists of six training modules. Statistics show that new drivers are more likely to have an accident in the first two years after passing their test, due to lack of driving experience. Pass Plus builds on your skills and knowledge. It will teach you how to anticipate, plan for and deal with all kinds of hazards, to help you become a more confident driver.

TAXI DRIVER TRAINING

Professional taxi and private hire vehicle drivers are responsible for the safety of fare paying passengers. Prospective taxi and private hire drivers need a full driving licence and some local authorities require them to pass a further driving assessment.

To become a taxi or private hire vehicle driver you must: be able to work legally in the UK and hold either a full UK driver's licence issued by the DVLA, or a full European Union driving licence together with a UK paper counterpart.

Other requirements may include paying a fee and passing a:

  • Criminal record check
  • Medical
  • 'Knowledge' test, to prove you have reasonable geographical knowledge of  the area in which you intend to drive
  • Driving Standards Agency (DSA) practical taxi test
Some local authorities also require drivers to take a DSA taxi test. The test standard is set at a level suitable for full driving licence holders, and is higher than the learner driver test.

Further information on the DSA taxi test can be obtained by requesting a copy of the private hire/hackney carriage assessment booklet from the local council in the area that you wish to operate in.

By clicking Find an Instructor you will be able to search for a local 3 Counties Driving instructor who can help you in training for your DSA taxi test.
